Heat pump
It works like an air conditioner in reverse: it pulls heat from the air and gives it to the water. It is efficient while the air is mild, which is exactly spring and autumn when you need it. We size it from the volume, the area and how early you want to open the pool.
A cover: the cheapest heating
The biggest heat loss is evaporation from the surface at night. An insulating cover cuts it and keeps the water clean too. Without it, the heat pump works much harder. See cover and safety.

Solar collectors
Where there is a south-facing roof or space near the pool, special collectors warm the water for free while the sun shines. They don't help much on cloudy days, so they are often combined with a heat pump.
Spas and small pools
In hydromassage spa pools and small pools heating is worth it more than anywhere: the volume is small, the water warms fast and the cost stays low.
