Marble and stone
Light marble with a non-slip finish is the classic Greek choice: cool underfoot, bright, timeless. Stone goes with old houses and dry-stone walls. Dark materials are better avoided on the coping, because they burn in August.

Timber and composite decking
Decking gives a warm, natural look and feels pleasant barefoot. Composite needs less care than solid timber. Decks are built on a subframe so they breathe and dry out.

Lawn up to the water
Natural or artificial grass up to the coping gives the most garden-like look. It needs a narrow strip of coping or deck in between, so soil and clippings don't end up in the water.

Falls and drainage
The paving around the pool falls slightly outwards and, where needed, has a channel drain. That way rain and irrigation water don't wash soil and fertiliser into the pool, one of the most common causes of green water.
